Pre-K – 12th Grade
Conduct your own self-guided visit any time of year and discover the unique evolution and biodiversity of southern California and the peninsula of Baja California. Topics to explore with your group include: geology, paleontology, evolution, and ecology. Use our free Exhibition Educator Guides to complement your museum visit. Teachers may preview general admission exhibitions for free with valid identification. Self-Guided Visits do not include special exhibitions.
Fee: $10 per student
Group size: 10 student minimum
Chaperones: We require a 1:8 chaperone to student ratio, but will allow up to a 1:3 ratio. Chaperones receive free general admission.
2 nd – 8 th Grade
This region has a rich fossil record. Investigate San Diego’s past by trekking through 75 million years of geologic history. Interpret Museum murals and describe how the flora, fauna, and climate have changed over millions of years. Meet the great granddaddy of your pet dog and swim in the ancient San Diego Bay. Identify types of geologic plate movement by interacting with Museum models and attempt to solve the mysteries that remain as you explore fantastic fossils found in San Diego County.
Fee: $11 per student. Tours available Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays at 10 AM and/or 11 AM.

2 nd – 8 th Grade
San Diego is one of the most biologically diverse counties in the United States. Observe how human settlement and population increases have impacted our region’s plant and animal inhabitants. Travel from the wetlands, coastal sage, riparian, chaparral and mountains, down to the desert. Learn how plants and animals adapt to the various habitats of San Diego County.
Fee: $11 per student. Tours available Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays at 10 AM and/or 11 AM.

4 th – 8 th Grade
Explore the world of skulls. Skulls and teeth can tell the story about what an animal ate, how it moved, and whether it was a hunter or hunted. Learn through observation the many stories from the smallest of creatures to the largest.

4th Grade
Take the long journey through geologic time as rocks and fossils form the Earth’s crust. Model the rock cycle and discover the patterns of fossil formation and solve the mystery behind fossils found in San Diego County.
4-ESS2: Earth Systems: Process that Shape the Earth
Fee: $12 per student. Classes available Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 9:50 AM and/or 11:30 AM.

3rd – 4th Grade
Come explore how these spineless creatures survive in the Earth’s harshest environments. Find out what it’s like to be part of an ant colony or survive in the chilly ocean waters of a tide pool and then the scorching sun.

4th Grade
Come experience life in the mountains and wetlands. Build a wetland and experiment with how wetland plants contribute to this unique and vital ecosystem. Using inquiry, experience how the shape of a bird beak determines what foods that bird eats.
4-LS1: Structure and Function

Kindergarten – 5th Grade
Learn how the Kumeyaay Nation relied on their skills and expertise to survive in the San Diego area. Grind acorns for flour, scrape yucca leaves for fiber, and practice your skills to live and thrive and experience what life was like in the 1300s.
